Dee Clark managed to put half a dozen pop hits on the chart in the late 50's and early 60's, and it is one of these that make him a memorable figure in rock history.

He was born Delectus Clark in Blytheville, Arkansas in 1938, and in 1941 moved to Chicago. His mother Delecta sang spirituals and encouraged her son with his singing. He joined a group called the Hambone Kids with Ronny Strong and Sammy McGrier and it was with this group that he made his recording debut at age 14, in 1952.
The following year he joined an R&B singing group known as the Goldentones, which later changed its name to the Kool Gents. This group managed to win a talent contest and Dee Clark and the others came to the attention of local disk jockey Herb Kent. Kent took them to Falcon/Abner, which was a subsidiary of the well-known Chicago recording label Vee-Jay. In 1956 the group recorded some records there as the Delegates.
Dee Clark had a full, resonant voice and enjoyed singing. He made his first recording as a solo act with Falcon in 1957. By early 1959, he had his first entry in the Top Forty with Nobody But You. He followed that with Just Keep It Up, which went on to be his only hit of the 60's in the UK. Several other minor hits would follow, including Hey Little Girl, How About That, and Your Friends.
Then came his big one. He recorded Raindrops on Vee-Jay with his big booming voice and using sound effects for the heavy rain heard on the recording. It was a huge hit, settling in at number two in 1961, but it also proved to be his last Top Forty record in the US.
After 1965, he disappeared from the charts completely, with the exception of his Ride A Wild Horse which had a brief run in the UK as late as 1975. Dee Clark suffered a heart attack and died on December 7, 1990 at age 52.

He also had a short periode with The Leaders (Ken Booth, Joe White & Roy Shirley) they had a great ballad on the Anderson label " I Don't Want To Cry".

This song was originally released in 1970 in Jamaica on the "Opportunity" label and on the "Big" label that same year in the UK.

I've had many request for more songs by J.Nash, being in between jobs at the moment, I finally have some time.
I love this version of the song. Great song even with an orchestra, I love it when the orchestra keeps on beating the old man, giving him an even harder time. You can almost feel the pain in Johnny's voice.

and I wanted to share it with you.

I lived with Dee Wolf for 5 years - June 1995 until September 2, 2000(when he died)in Memphis, Tennessee. He told me the story of Alone in the Chapel which he recorded with his friend, Joe. Shortly after the recording he appeared on a television show in Memphis, Tennessee and decided that television was much better than records alone. He broke his recording contract and went to New York where he literally walked into ABC and told them he wanted a tv show. At that time, there were no black tv hosts (before soul train...after Nat King Cole). He got a 13 week series which was a variety show where he introduced such talents as Bobby Womack (his first tv appearance), the Chi-Lites, the Stylistics (their first tv appearance). He did shows in Toledo, Ohio; Memphis, Tennessee; and Eugene, Oregon, where he met me. After 3 years in Eugene, we came to Memphis and did the show there in 1998. We had the Chi-Lites on the show in Memphis and they had 2 background vocalists. One was Bobby Womack's sister and the other was Vanessa Williams' sister. One day we were riding in the elevator at The Claridge House, where we lived in Memphis, and this man said, "Oh, my God! You are Dee Wolf, aren't you?" When Dee answered yes, the man said, "You sang with my uncle, Joe, of Dee and Joe." It is a small and amazing world! So yes, Dee & Joe were a 'one hit wonder' group in the 1960's. Dee had lived down the street from where Barry Gordy started Motown. He knew all the Motown hopefuls, and he told me many stories about those days.

I don't know nothing and could not find anything about this duo. This might be their only release on this Detroit based label and probaly their only release ever. There's not much info on the label either. There where only 13 releases of which 4 have also been released on the "Music Now" label.
It's probably a late 60's release. I found one copy being sold in Japan for $150.-

The flip (see scan) is a funky northern tune. Both sides are written by the same songwriters. Maybe D.Wolf is one of the singers. Who knows?

One of Jamaica's most beloved singers, Dobby Dobson has had a long-running career, but his name has been permanently twinned with 1967's self-penned "I'm a Loving Pauper." Born in Kingston in 1945, Dobson entered the music industry via the island's popular talent show circuit. In 1960, he paired up with Chuck Josephs, and under the moniker Chuck & Dobby they cut their debut single, "Cool School," for Duke Reid. Over the next two years, the pair recorded a steady stream of hits. With the duo's demise, Dobson joined forces with a group of college friends as the Deltas, cutting "Cry a Little Cry" for Linden Pottinger in 1963, another huge hit for the singer. Several more popular 45s followed that year, all credited to Dobson alone. The following year, the singer was fronting the Sheiks, a band featuring pianist Jackie Mittoo, then in 1965 he linked up with Rupie Edwards and Junior Menz in the Virtues. With the rise of rocksteady, Duke Reid's Treasure Isle was the place to be, and Dobson cut a clutch of excellent singles there, including "Pauper" and the equally successful "Trouble Jim." In 1968, though, the singer was back at Studio One, where he cut such hits as "Seems I'm Losing You." It was his old bandmate, Rupie Edwards, however, who would oversee his biggest. Dobson's 1972 cover of "That Wonderful Sound" was a smash right across the Caribbean, the best-selling single of its time.

Buoyed by that success, Dobson now began self-producing his own singles as well as continuing to cut 45s for others. His debut album, Wonderful Sound, arrived in 1977, with 1978's Sweet Dreams following hot on its heels. A split festive set with Ringo, Sweet Christmas, provided holiday cheer. Dreams, incidentally, was not a reggae set; instead, it was filled with lovely ballads, and although Dobson continued having hits during this period in Jamaica, the roots scene passed him by entirely, at least as a vocalist. In the mid-'70s, Dobson was working at Federal Studio, running the auditions for new talent. While there, he discovered the Meditations and produced their earliest singles, as well as 1978's Message from the Meditations and Wake Up albums. Dobson also oversaw Barrington Levy's 1977 recording debut (with the Mighty Multitude), "Fi Me Black Girl." Even after immigrating to the States in 1979, Dobson's career continued apace, with 1982's "Sweetheart" nearly breaking into the British chart. Even so, the singer's output slackened notably during this decade, although live appearances at reggae festivals kept his profile high. The '90s were far more productive, kicked off with Studio One's roundup of oldies Through the Years, with new material arriving on 1994's At Last and 1997's If I Only Had Time set. Released in 2000, VP's Vintage Series roundup featured the Donovan Germaine-produced hit "Words." That same year, the death of Dobson's mother led to a crisis of faith, and the singer was born again. Since then, he's continued to record, but now concentrates exclusively on Christian music.

Jimmy Lewis was born in the tiny delta town of Itta Bena near Greenwood, Mississippi but Los Angeles has been his home now for over 40 years. For someone whose sound is so steeped in the gospel tradition, it comes as quite a surprise that his introduction to music came not through the church, but through a friend who ran a car club in LA! Somewhere along the line he hooked-up with his first writing partner, Clifford Chambers. They worked together right through the 60s and together with James Carmichael (later to find fame as producer of the Commodores, the Jackson 5 and Lionel Richie) they produced a small string of 45s, the first being ‘Goodbye Sorrow’on Cyclone Records in 1962. A year later there were three releases for J J Jones’ Four “J” record label. One track ‘Wait Until Spring’ was picked-up for wider distribution, over a year later, by Era Records and did quite well. It was obvious from these fine, but generally derivative recordings that Little Richard, Ray Charles and long-time hero Sam Cooke were the influences on Lewis’ music. It was also apparent that here was a lyricist who held great promise. A second Era release, the rated mover, ‘What Can I Do Now’ further cemented his progress and his voice caught the ear of Bill Pinkney, one of the original Drifters, (who at that time also included, Gerhart Thrasher, Bobby Hollis and Bobby Hendricks), and Lewis joined the group replacing Hendricks as lead singer from 1963-65. My kids are one a 4 week vacation in Suriname and for the first time in 6 years I'm all alone. I was looking forward to it, but now they are gone the house is so empty and I feel lost. So I'm out a lot, working, trying to find some great vinyl and stuff like that. But it looks like the whole of the Netherlands is on vacation and there's not much activity. So in the coming weeks don't expect to much posting, will try to do at least one a week.

Lattimore Brown who was believed to be dead since the 80's is still alive and well, read about it over at the above blog's.

Bobby Dunn sang for The Empires in the 50's. The Empires also recorded as the Prestos, The Thrill Tones and The Whirlers.
There's not much info on Bobby Dunn either. I do found he also has releases on the Ordell label and there seems to be a Bobby Dunn singing gospel. But I'm not sure if they're the same person.

I love the mans voice. On the flip side of this 45 (also a ballad) he really goes for it and pours out the emotions in his voice.

Delroy Wilson was part of the duo's Higgs (Joe Higgs) & Wilson and Delroy & Paulette (Paulette Williams of the Williams sisters).
He also teamed up with Jennifer Lara & Hortense Ellis.
I could not find any information on who the lady is singing this song with Delroy, but comparing the voice with other songs I have I'm almost sure it must be Paulette Williams.
Delroy recorded his first song "If I had a beautiful day" at the age of thirteen for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd.

You know what's the goddamn coolest moment of this album? You probably don't, no way you could guess. You just read it in the 'best song' line. Yeah, yeah, it's when Al Kooper shouts out 'I LOVE you baby, LOVE you baby' and then, in a breathy high tone, adds 'more than you'll ever kno- oh- ohww'. In that way, blam, he triggers the John Lennon association, and that's godly. It's one of the most intense, breathtaking, simply gorgeous "white soul" offerings of the epoch, and almost earns the record an extra point in my little red book. Dude, we all know that Al Kooper can play (especially those of us who revere Highway 61 Revisited), but he can sing as well, oh yes he can.

Oh. Sorry. I forgot to mention that I've actually just started reviewing Child Is Father To The Man, the first and - arguably, but almost certainly - the best album of Blood, Sweat, & Tears. Why best? Because it's the only one that has Al Kooper on it, of course. It's also revolutionary, because most reverend rock historians will be telling you that this is the origin of the mighty movement known as 'jazz-rock' from then on. Of course, it's blatantly incorrect, because that leaves out Traffic, and, uh, the Graham Bond Organization, and, er, well, I guess Frank Zappa could be called one of the forefathers of jazz-rock as well, not to mention the works of real former jazz dudes like Miles Davis and all, but I guess this album just did to the jazz-rock movement more or less the same that Never Mind The Bollocks did for punk rock nine years later: widely popularized it. Indeed, this isn't your average elitist non-accessible jazzy record where the elitist sits and shed tears over the tenth minute of a convoluted sax solo while the average guy has long since slipped into his headphones to put on some Led Zep. The songs are mostly short, with just a couple six/eight minutes exceptions, and very much oriented for the pop single market. The presence of strings (the so-called 'Blood Sweat & Tears Ensemble') needn't surprise anyone, so probably the only unstandard element here is the regular three-man brass section of the band. Well, I guess we could call it a first of sorts. The basic problem is that the songwriting on the album just isn't that consistent. The songs may be single-oriented, but they're not too keen on inserting actual hooks, and getting on on the strength of groove alone doesn't always help, because as the album progresses parts of it become monotonous. That said, Al Kooper really really saves the day. He contributes three things - his voice, his playing, and his composition, and these are just about the best things on the record. The guy has always had marvelous taste, and his organ riffs and piano improvs are fresh and sharp, his voice straight and hard-hitting, and his songs actually the best of the bunch... scary, isn't it, that it was him, the band's organizer and main creative soul, to leave it first? The only analogy I can remember is Roy Wood leaving the Electric Light Orchestra after their debut record, but at least he left Jeff Lynne behind him, while Kooper simply didn't have anyone else in the band to match his talent. Imagine Ian Anderson leaving Jethro Tull after Stand Up and leaving the rest of the band to carry on, and you get my idea. Anyway, as I already pointed out, 'I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know' is the definite highlight on here, just slicing through your soul with its sharp blasts of brass and heavy bluesy guitar accompanying Al's soulful wailing, but it's not the only gem. 'My Days Are Numbered' is another one, wittily alternating mid-tempo bluesy verses with the gospelish slow chorus and Al turning in yet another performance of a lifetime. The brass parts are particularly tight on here, with magnificent trumpet riffs, but the backwards guitar solo by Ztak Evets (Ztak Evets, get it?) is clever as well. And that's only the first in a series of three tight jazz-poppy numbers contributed by Al: 'I Can't Quit Her' is a wonderful love song with some more Beatles influences in the singing, and some more unpredictable chord modulations in between the verses and choruses. Finally, there's 'House In The Country', about which the liner notes actually warn us that 'all the animal sounds are not played by animals', which is, uh, funny, I guess. I kinda like the Kinks' song of the same name more, but this one has got a cute nursery beat anyway. Kooper's two other contributions are a bit more debatable - I have to say that the pretentiously-titled 'Modern Adventures Of Plato, Diogenes And Freud' to me sounds like a pretty tuneless bore, pretty much like that clock on the wall that Al keeps lamenting about. It's just an atmospheric string-quartet based chant that seems to provide the platform for Al to unravel some of his metaphysic visions (funny thing, I didn't even consult the actual lyrics sheet before I wrote that line and now that I do I find the word 'metaphysic' directly mentioned in the lyrics! Ha!), and the bonus version on the CD release that substitutes the strings for a simple piano background hardly saves things. However, the eight-minute rave-up 'Somethin' Goin' On' is an entirely different thing already, because that's truly one solid groove, with excellent guitar and piano solos and a classy 'brass battle' at the end of the track with the bnd really getting it on. Too bad I can't really say anything about the non-Kooper tracks because to do that, I need to put 'em back on and my CD tracklist is written in tiny letters, I'm too lazy to select the right number on the player. You can already tell they're absolutely unmemorable, however, repeated listens at least confirm the fact that they all have something going for them. Like Steve Katz's vocal, for instance, which predates Bryan Ferry's bleating by a good four years. Or Kooper's soothing Dylanish organ on 'Morning Glory' (see, I remembered one! Ha! I'm Albert Einstein!). Or the mysterious "ondioline" on 'Meagan's Gypsy Eyes' (see, I remember another one! Ha! I'm Julius Caesar!) Or the really pretty vocal harmonies on the Goffin & King cover 'So Much Love' (see, I remember a THIRD one! Ha! Had I been in Moses' place, I wouldn't have to waste forty years in the friggin' desert!). In all, the only thing I find vaguely offensive is the silly 'Overture' - blame it on typical Sixties' excesses that an album should be beginning with one and a half minutes of bland symphonic intro and some jerk ridiculously laughing into the microphone. No wonder 'the laugher wishes to remain anonymous', as the liner notes say; probably afraid of getting a black eye for that. But never mind the excesses, just keep in mind that this is the beginning of jazz-rock as a popular movement and a solid beginning at that. And don't blame it for all those late-period Chicago records. Al Kooper might have been a giant of art, but he sure wasn't muscular enough to prevent that from happening.

Eddie Floyd has always been one of my favorite soul singers. I saw him performing live back in Suriname in 1970, it was a real thrill. Especially when he sang "Girl I Love You" because at that time I was head over heals in love with a girl I had met at a family birthday party almost a year before. A few months after that concert I danced the song with her on my sixteenth birthday. I begged my parents to have the party just to be able to dance with her and be close to her, because all previous attempts to get close to her had failed. So from the beginning it was never meant to be, but I still cherish those days.
Todays song is one of his earlier songs. Eddie started singing with the "Falcons" somewhere in 1956.

Ever since I heard Johnny Jones his voice for the first time, singing Tennessee Waltz, I was captured by it.

What a voice !!!!

Since then I've been looking for other songs by him, but I could never find one. Then I heard a gospel song by the Swanee Quintet and there was that wonderful voice again.

I just recently purchased the CD with todays gospel ballad. The CD is his second Creed 3018 LP ('72) with the Johnny Jones singers (who are the Mimms Brothers). It has two bonus tracks.

I just read that Buddy Miles passed away.

The song was an enormous hit back in Suriname. It was number 1 for a very long time. The best memories I have regarding this song was during my school vacation in september 1971, peddling down the Suriname river in a korjaal ( see picture below) to visit an old plantation called Rorac, and stay for a few days . My best friends family owned the place, right in the middle of nowhere.

I'm not sure but judging from the name I think this is a group from one of the French Antilles. Godwin Gramms is well known in the Caribbeans for one 45 with the ballads "Ivette My Love" and "Myrtha My Darling".
I could not find any information on both the group or the singer.

The original label of the song is also unknown to me, but to answer the demand the song was printed on the Suriname "Uncle" label in The Netherlands.

The Magic Notes where from the late 50's and made their first recording in 1960 or maybe on year earlier. They recorded on Smiths, Faith, Hi-Lite and Hi-Tone. Some of their records where also released on the UK Blue-Beat in the same year as the original Jamaica releases.

As you can see the above side of this 45 was "wrongly" credited to Phylis Allyson, or the labels where all used up and they just used the ones they still had.

Glen Ricks aka Ricketts is a Jamaican born.
He moved to Canada with his parents, to come back to Jamaica and return back to Canada later. In the 70's he recorded "I found a love" a Wilson Pickett cover. After he went back to Canada he recorded the song again in 1989 on the Scorpio label.
His latest recordings where done on Jamaica again.

Don't know much about this group. They released about 15 singles ( I have only this ones) on many (10) labels, there UK (5) releases not including . I only could find info on mentioned labels but I'm almost sure there are more.

This is a beautiful Jamaican ballad, with the guitar going in a slow ska rhythm. I've loved this song from the first time I heard it back in the sixties.
I love the combination of the vocals, with the backing vocal just a click later then the lead singer, to me it makes the beauty of the song and that's what creates the atmosphere of the song.
Makes you want to hold and squeeze your brown eyed girl real close and dance away into the tropical night.

The Rajah is from Barbados, I could not find any information on who/what The Rajah is the singer or the band. From the name I would think it's only the singer. Eight songs where released under this name. The last one was in 1981.

"Down On My Knees" was released after I had left Suriname, but songs like these where always send to friends and family and the many Suriname collectors living in The Netherlands.
There's a stamp on the scan from one of those collectors who had a record shop in Rotterdam.
This ballad is one of my favorite Caribbean ballads, I love the begging voice of the singer. He's really hurt and he wants her back.
