Johnny Honeycutt - Advice On Man's Love Life Fury-415'74

My kids are one a 4 week vacation in Suriname and for the first time in 6 years I'm all alone. I was looking forward to it, but now they are gone the house is so empty and I feel lost. So I'm out a lot, working, trying to find some great vinyl and stuff like that. But it looks like the whole of the Netherlands is on vacation and there's not much activity. So in the coming weeks don't expect to much posting, will try to do at least one a week.

One of my blog visitors send me an email asking for this song, it was a great hit among Suriname people.
The follow up is more of the same (see scan below)

Little Johnny Jones - Just One Step

Ever since I heard Johnny Jones his voice for the first time, singing Tennessee Waltz, I was captured by it.
What a voice !!!!

Since then I've been looking for other songs by him, but I could never find one. Then I heard a gospel song by the Swanee Quintet and there was that wonderful voice again.

I just recently purchased the CD with todays gospel ballad. The CD is his second Creed 3018 LP ('72) with the Johnny Jones singers (who are the Mimms Brothers). It has two bonus tracks.

Buddy Miles - Down By The River

I just read that Buddy Miles passed away.
Buddy Miles.com

The song was an enormous hit back in Suriname. It was number 1 for a very long time. The best memories I have regarding this song was during my school vacation in september 1971, peddling down the Suriname river in a korjaal ( see picture below) to visit an old plantation called Rorac, and stay for a few days . My best friends family owned the place, right in the middle of nowhere.

boot used by runaway slaves to travel the rivers

Imagine two 17 years old teenagers crossing a tropical river in this korjaal and a battery-radio somewhere in the front, with the volume on max and Buddy Miles singing "Down By The River".

Combo Juveniles ft Godwin Gramms - Never Leave Me Lonely_Uncle '74

I'm not sure but judging from the name I think this is a group from one of the French Antilles. Godwin Gramms is well known in the Caribbeans for one 45 with the ballads "Ivette My Love" and "Myrtha My Darling".
I could not find any information on both the group or the singer.

The original label of the song is also unknown to me, but to answer the demand the song was printed on the Suriname "Uncle" label in The Netherlands.

Charlie Hodges - I'll Never Fall In Love Again (Calla 176) '70 mono & stereo side

Charles Hodges recorded on Alto and Calla. After his first 2 releases on Calla he started using the name Charlie Hodges.

I could not find info on possible other labels he recorded on, nor could I find any info on himself. I love his voice especially in this song.

I did find indications of on a organ player by the same name but I don't know if it's him.

The Rajah - Down On My Knees (Isador 1a) '75

The Rajah is from Barbados, I could not find any information on who/what The Rajah is the singer or the band. From the name I would think it's only the singer. Eight songs where released under this name. The last one was in 1981.

Rajah Discography

"Down On My Knees" was released after I had left Suriname, but songs like these where always send to friends and family and the many Suriname collectors living in The Netherlands.
There's a stamp on the scan from one of those collectors who had a record shop in Rotterdam.
This ballad is one of my favorite Caribbean ballads, I love the begging voice of the singer. He's really hurt and he wants her back.

Eddie Holloway - I Am The One('78 and '91 version)

Sorry for neglecting you the past few weeks, but I'm in the middle of reorganizing my music and it's taking longer then I had expected.
Before I turn in (it's 2 am) I want to at least put in a link for you to download a song or two, I'll put in a scan tomorrow. If you don't mind.

Todays song is among my favorites (the'78 version). My kids always complain when I play this song, cause for about 4 minutes and a few seconds I'm alone in this world and I pump up the volume.
What a great deep soul ballad.
Eddie has redone the song in 1991, I'll put both versions in a nice zip for you.

Holloway also was a member of the "Soul Pleasers" who released "I Found A Love" on the Living Legend Label.
Sir Shambling was so kind to send me a copy of that song (still looking for the 45). Thanks again John.

Clarence Carter - If I Stay (Venture 141) '81

Clarence Alabama Music Hall Of Fame

Clarence Carter released 2 albums on the "Venture" label. The first earned him the titel "Come Back Artist of The Year" in 1981. "If I Stay" is from this album. A lovely ballad, dripping with emotions, his voice still had it.
Ever since I first heard his voice in my teens it caught me, and it still does especially when he sings ballads like this one.

Wendy Alleyne - Midnight Blue (Wirl508-1)'76

There's not very much information on this lady. The latest news on Wendy is that she has been selected and has received "The Living Legend Award" on Jan 2007 at the Barbados Music Awards.

Wendy to me is mostly known for her beautiful ballads and her lovely voice. I know she has an album with most of her ballads from the period of this record but I could never find it.Update Oct 13 (I did not feel sure when I wrote down the previous sentence, cause somewhere in the back of my mind it did not seem right, but I could not find the album, it took me a while but I finally found it............... hidden somewhere between the other goodies)
